We provide minibuses and one-to-one car transport for elderly, frail, disabled and rurally-isolated people in and around the Stroud area. The car service is maintained by volunteer drivers who use their own cars and receive a mileage allowance as their expense. Our minibus service is run by the Gloucestershire Minibus Service – call 01453 762221 to find out more about this.

Three easy steps to start using our one-to-one car transport service, tailored to meet your needs:

  1. Contact us for a friendly chat so we can find out what you need, and how we can help:  Call us 01453 767771 (9am-1pm Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, or leave a message), pop in and see us at 17 George Street, Stroud GL5 3DP during these opening hours, or email transportstroud {at}
  2. Register. Once we’ve discussed how we can help, we will ask you to register using a form which needs a few details about you*, so that we can match you to a driver. It costs £10 per year to join, and £5 for the first 3 miles and then 50 pence per mile thereafter, per passenger, for your journeys. View and print the 2018 Registration Form If you have any problems viewing/printing the form, just call us 01453 767771 and we’ll post you a form instead
  3. Once we’ve agreed your pick up and take home day/time, you just wait for your driver to collect you! We do ask for at least 48 hours’ notice of transport requests.

Types of journeys you can make – just a few ways in which our volunteer drivers can help you:

      • Doctors, dentists and health centre appointments (such as physiotherapy)
      • Hospital appointments at Stroud, Gloucester, Cheltenham and Berkeley
      • Visiting friends or relatives whether in their homes, in hospital, residential or nursing homes
      • Shopping
      • The local Post Office
      • Clubs, Day Centres and other social activities

How much?

In addition to the annual £10 registration fee, clients’ journeys are charged at £5.00 for the first 3 miles and then 50 pence per mile thereafter.

Clients are charged for all miles, including the distance from the volunteer driver’s home to the pick-up address, destination, return address and for the driver to return to their home. We will endeavour to use the nearest driver to you to keep costs down.

We require 48 hours notice prior to your journey to allow us to find the nearest available volunteer driver to you and likewise if you have made a booking and then cancel the journey, we ask for a minimum of 12 hours wherever possible, to enable us to cancel the driver. A cancellation charge of £5.00 could be added to your next journey charge if less than 12 hours’ notice is received.

Payment for your journey are made on the day to the driver in cash or by cheque. You will receive a receipt for your payment from the driver.

Any car parking charges are paid by the client and will be included in the cost of your journey (if you have a Blue Badge please display it in the volunteer’s car for free parking).

All bookings must be made through the office – not with the driver. You may request the same driver for your regular journey and we will try to honour your request, however there are times when the driver may not be available to you.

*When completing the registration form, Stroud District Ring & Ride, Volunteer Car Transport and Volunteer Centre will consider this to be your consent to hold your personal information, which is necessary to provide you with our transport services in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998.  The information will only be available to those personnel responsible for administering and providing the transport services at the centre.
